The Woolworth apprentice journey

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”—this wisdom by Lao Tse may be over 2,500 years old, but it is just as true today as it was back then. An apprenticeship at Woolworth is also a kind of journey: the start of a new, exciting phase of life with many different stages along the way. And before you can enjoy the view, you may sometimes face a challenging and steep climb.

Fortunately, you don’t have to master this journey alone. There is, of course, a travel agency with a tour guide: the Training and Development department. They take care of the planning and are your first point of contact throughout the entire journey. In addition, there are many other travel companions—your trainer, district manager, store manager, colleagues, and of course your fellow apprentices.

The apprentices encounter unfamiliar cultures (whether in the Ruhr region or in Munich—there are definitely some differences) and have to overcome various challenges, from small everyday hurdles to larger projects such as new store openings, inventories, or store refurbishments. And of course, gaining initial leadership experience is also part of the journey.

“An apprenticeship with us is diverse, interesting, and sometimes even an adventure,” says Claudia Zoche, Head of Training and Development. “Our apprentices explore the world of Woolworth and gain experience and knowledge with every new stage of their journey.”
