Illuminant guide
How should illuminants be disposed of?
To answer this question, you must first ascertain which type of illuminant you have. They are divided as follows:
- Lightbulbs
- halogen lamps
These can be disposed of in normal household or bulky waste. On the other hand:
- all forms of fluorescent lamp and discharge (energy-saving) lamp
- LED lamps
must be treated as electrical goods and recycled.
The pictogram of the crossed-out trash can is a helpful indication.
You can dispose of illuminants at your local waste disposal site or at dedicated collection points.
What should I do in case of broken glass (e.g. on an energy-saving lamp)?
Energy-saving lamps require special handling as they may contain small amounts of mercury:
- Cutting hazard due to broken glass
- Pick up large parts, gather smaller parts with a suitable implement
- Small parts and dust can be carefully picked up with a damp cloth or adhesive tape
- Vacuum cleaners or brooms are unsuitable as they disperse small parts and dust
- Ventilate the room well
Broken, defective or spent illuminants must be disposed of properly at a collection point.
